Course contents :  "Virgos and Viragos in Middle English Literature"

The course will explore some key texts dealing with the issue of female virginity and/or with the virago type:

  • St Paul
  • Physiology and etymology
  • Chaucer's viragos
  • Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
  • Holy Maidenhood
  • The Life and the Passion of St Juliana
  • Chaucer's Legend of Dido
  • Chaucer's Knight's Tale
  • Chaucer's Man of Law's Tale
Course objective :  Feminist medievalists use many of the tools of contemporary feminist literary theory and engage in similar debates. However, because of the complexity of the medieval background, a course on medieval gender identities has to provide readers with the fullest guidance towards the linguistic, literary and historical understanding of these multi-faceted texts.

Individual written essay.
