Course contents :  1. Studying syntactic problems in contemporary German, in particular word order.
2. Introduction to contemporary German linguistics (syntax).
3. Practicing basic grammar and vocabulary.

Prerequisites :  The first and second year courses on German in the Department of German or Germanic Languages and Literatures of a University.
Workshops :  1. Obligatory:
a. Making exercises and reading linguistic texts to prepare discussion in class.
b. Translating texts at home.
2. Optional: Conversation exercises.
Organization :  30 hours;

Written notes :  Work used: Grewendorf, Hamm, Sternefeld: Sprachliches Wissen. Suhrkamp (Taschenbuch).
The students are supposed to have:
- Langenscheidts Großwôrterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache.
- A German Grammar.
- Langenscheidt: basic vocabulary of German.
Sheets will also be handed out.
Assessment :  Written examination.
Oral examination: theory, basic grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation.
