Course contents :  This course aims at developing and strengthening communication skills in both everyday and business contexts.

Course contents:

  • explanation and discussion of recent articles/audio or video documents on socio-economic, financial, (inter-)cultural or political topics.
  • presentation and discussion of episodes 5 to 10 of Kapers op de kust (story of a SME, business Dutch)
Course objective :  Strenghening communication practice in everyday Dutch.

Mastery of business Dutch in situations requiring oral communication (listening comprehension; speaking) and written communication (reading comprehension, writing letters and documents)
Prerequisites :  Mastery of everyday Dutch and good knowledge of "technical" vocabulary (Dutch levels 1 to 4).
Organization :  2 hours spread over 2 modules (each module consists of 6 weeks).
The course is mainly organized as a seminar (there are about 30 students in a group) implying the active participation of students. Students will be asked to prepare (in advance) the exercises and documents on which the course is based.


  • oral exercises: debates, presentations, conversation clubs.
  • writing exercises: writing reports, letters or a CV, summary of lectures, interviews.
  • listening comprehension exercises.
  • exercises aiming at developing the acquisition of "technical" vocabulary.
Student work is shared out as following: 4 credit course (4 times 24 h = 96h):
class attendance: 24 h
reading, preparation of the exercises and lecture: 48 h
interview: 24 h

Kapers op de kust. Een bedrijfsgerichte cursus Nederlands (Part two)
Assessment :  4 credit course (L3 Dutch - optional course):

  • listening comprehension (after the 2 modules; 25% of the global mark)
  • written exam (25 %): 1)after the first module: questions on Kapers op de kust 2) after the 2 modules: vocabulary and contents of the multimedia files
  • oral exam
    the oral exam consists of 2 parts: 1) oral presentation of a social, economic or political topic (3/4); 2) presentation of an interview of a person working in a Dutch speaking environment (1/4).
Criteria for evaluation:
Listening comprehension test: capacity to understand and formulate the main ideas of a broadcast.
Written tests: knowledge of the specific vocabulary and the grammatical structures; accurate language; quality of the contents
Oral test: accuracy and fluency; quality of the contents; capacity to defend one's point of view
