Course contents :  1. In-class course (60 hours):

  • Further study of everyday English vocabulary and introduction to English philosophical texts.
  • Review and further study of grammar basics.
  • Developing reading and listening comprehension skills.
  • Communication practice in everyday English.
  • Writing exercises.
Course objective :  Developing and strengthening the four skills (listening and reading comprehension as well as speaking and writing) in everyday English and in the language of the press and of philosophical texts.

At the end of their first year, students should be able to understand and comment on several chapters from a book related to philosophy.
Prerequisites :  This course is not a beginners'course. Students should have a good basic knowledge of English (secondary school level or ALTE level 1 or Council of Europe level A2).
Organization :  The in-class course is taught to about 25 students for two hours every week. Students are required to prepare the units from the coursebook every week (about one unit every three weeks). This preparation work varies in time depending on the students' previous knowledge. There will be some tutorial hours to help the students prepare their oral presentation.

Written notes :  Compulsory:

  • Coursebook "English for first-year philosophy students", available at Intercopy.
  • "Grammaire anglaise de base" (with exercises and key) (ISLV): available at Intercopy.
  • Several chapters from a book to choose from a list.
Recommended:

  • Dictionnaire ROBERT & COLLINS.
  • "Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English" or "The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English".
  • "English Grammar in Use" (intermediate), Cambridge University Press.
Assessment :  1. Continuous assessment (2/20):

  • Assessment test at the beginning of the year.
  • 4 computer-marked in-class tests (2/20).
  • Written assignments.
2. Written exam (8/20):

  • Reading comprehension exercises based on an unseen text.
  • Vocabulary exercises.
  • Grammar exercises.
  • Writing exercise.

3. Oral exams (8/20):

  • Oral presentations in groups of 2 students (2/20).
  • 15-minute discussion based on several chapters from a book related to philosophy (6/20).
4. Listening comprehension exam (2/20)
