| Course contents : | This course is based on the study of the language and vocabulary specific to sociology and human sciences as well as on academic skills such as note-taking, summarizing, paraphrasing and presenting content.
The CEFRL objective level of the course is C1 in all four language skills. |

| Course objective : | This 45-hour course aims at the continued improvement of the four basic skills, namely listening, reading, speaking and writing, particularly in the context of the academic study of sociology. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | This is an upper-intermediate to advanced level course (CEFRL C1). The level required to take this course is intermediate to upper-intermediate (CEFRL B2), which corresponds to the level of the Level-2 English course (LANG0003). |
 |
| Organization : | The class is taught for three hours every week in the first semester.
Attendance is essential and participation in class will count for 5 percent of the final mark. |
 |
| Written notes : | Students will need a copy of the fifth edition the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and a copy of the third edition of J. Macionis and K. Plummer's Sociology: a Global Introduction.
There will be a book sale in September for the students who wish to buy the books at a discount. Details will be given in class the first week of term. |

| Assessment : | 1. Continuous assessment: 3/20
- Students will have to hand in a number of assignments during the semester.
2. Final examination in January (in three parts): 16/20

Oral exam about several chapters from the course book (6/20)

Written exam based on the topics and all the language material dealt with in class. (8/20)
