| Course contents : | This CEFRL-level B2-C1 ESP course continues the development of reading, data gathering, and note-taking using texts or sets of texts (as started in the English Level A course). It also focuses on research and report-writing capacities, oral understanding and presentation skills. |

| Course objective : | The purpose of this course is threefold:
- allow students to read and understand English scientific literature,
- allow students to follow short oral presentations in English and take accurate notes of them.
- allow students to present scientific information in correct and consistent English.

| Prerequisites : | English Level A (taught in first year of the Bachelor's Degree in Engineering - CEFRL-level B1-B2) or equivalent (for example: IELTS 5.5-6 or Cambridge Advanced English A-C). |

| Workshops : | The course features 12 weekly sessions (duration: 1.30 hours). Each session requires a long preparation which is essential and mandatory. There are no ex cathedra lectures but rather language workshops in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
Together, active participation, oral presentations and written assignments during the year account for 30% to 40% of the final grade. |

| Organization : | Students are gathered in room S22 (TP physique building) in the first week of the academic year. The groups are formed and schedules and venues are communicated on that day. |

| Written notes : | English for Engineering (2008-2009) course notes compulsory. Internet access recommended. |
 |
| Assessment : | Written exam in January with (a) multiple choice questions on a lecture and a sight text presenting new information on one of the subjects discussed in workshops, and (b) several written tasks.
Continuous assessment based on oral presentations and written assignments during the year.
Students must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the general scientific vocabulary, their ability to read and understand a wide selection of scientific papers in English (global and detailed understanding), to do research on and present scientific information in a consistent way. They will also have to demonstrate an ability to accurately understand data presented orally. |
