Duration :  30h Th
Credits/ECTS :
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in CriminologyPremier quadrimestre3
Holder(s) :  Etienne Quertemont
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Introduction to elementary statistical procedures : Concept of variable, measures of central tendency and variability, normal distribution, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing and inferential statistics, chi-square tests for categorical data, Student t tests for paired and independent samples, non-parametric tests, correlations and linear regressions, and analysis of variance. Included in the course will be the teaching of the use of the software « statistica » in order to properly apply these statistical tools.

The course emphasizes the use of statistical procedures in situations that criminologists might encounter. The content of the course therefore focuses on data analysis and exercise solving
Course objective :  There are three main goals in this course:

1) Introduction to basic statistical procedures and to the use of a statistical software in order to allow the analysis of simple data and the formulation of a conclusion accordingly.
2) To allow students to read and understand the scientific literature in criminology.
3) To develop the analytic and critical thinking of students
Prerequisites :  Basic use of a computer.
Organization :  Each course session starts with a theoretical explanation of the statistical tools during the first hour, followed by a training to the use of the software « statistica » on a computer.
Assessment :  An open book exam is organized at the end of the course. The questions essentially involve problem solving and data analysis using the software « statistica ».
