Bachelor in geological sciences, 2nd yearDeuxième quadrimestre3
Holder(s) :  Henri‑Pierre Garnir, David Strivay
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The course is a short introduction to computer science aimed at students in life science.
The history and probable future of computer technology is presented. Some basic concepts of programming are introduced and classical programs (word processing, spreadsheet, data analysis, browser, etc...) are used to demonstrate how a computer could help a scientist to manage his data.
Students are explained how to exchange and present information on the Internet.
The working of a computer and its peripherals is evoked and practical information about interfacing a computer with laboratory instruments is given.
Course objective :  Fundamental concepts of computer science
Evolution of the computer (history - future, Moore law)
Programming concept (a.e. Object oriented programming)
Some numerical algorithms - data reduction and analysis by computer
Classical programs: word processing, spreadsheet, database, etc...
Network idea and the Internet
Technical information: structure of a computer, working principles of the peripherals
Main interfacing protocols - basic (Serial, USB, IEEE1394, GPIB, etc...)
Prerequisites :  None
Workshops :  The schedule is available on the web pages of the U.Lg.
Organization :  The course is given in 6 sessions of 2 hours.
