Course contents :  The 2008-2009 lectures will be devoted to :

« Liège edition and press of the 18th Century: freedom,

equality, sensual pleasure ». Three orientations :
a) Freedom

- The woman call for freedom in novels and opera (the « Desoer collection »)..

- The struggle against esclavagism in the Journal encyclopédique and the Esprit des journaux.

b) Equality

- The egalitarian woman-claim: the triumph of the woman-writer (Madame Du Boccage, Madame Riccoboni, Madame de Villeneuve, etc.).

- The egalitarian social-claim and the promotion of the working-class in the « drame bourgeois » (especially Sébastien Mercier) and in the works on the « arts méchaniques » (Pluche).

- Counterfeitings of d'Helvétius : the debate on the natural equality of mankind.

c) Sensual pleasure

- The « century of crying » and the « sensible man » in novels printed by J.-Fr. Bassompierre and Cl. Plomteux.

- Counterfeiting of La Mettrie's Ecole de la volupté by J.-Fr. Bassompierre.

- Printing and receiving the poets of sensual pleasure : arny, Colardeau, Léonard.

- In search of the Liège editions of erotic and pornographic classicals : Fougeret de Monbron, Nerciat, Restif de La Bretonne.
Course objective :  Give to the student the methodological and documentary means to start a study in the history of book and to situate the content of the latter in the general context of Modern Times literature. Afford various trails for the identification of Liège counterfeitings. Provide the information concerning the current studies on quantitative analysis of private libraries or book collections and the reception of the European printed production in the local press.
Prerequisites :  A basis knowledge of French literature of early modern times and the cultural history of Liège prince-bishopdom.
Workshops :  Personal research on the edition of an author or a literary work and the reception of European literature in local press.
