Course contents :  The theme of the course for this academic year (2008-2009) is "'Baroque' Italy", and in particular vocal music.
Course objective :  The aim of the course is to provide students with points of reference and the necessary methodological tools to develop a critical reflection relating to a series of 17th century Italian vocal pieces. The introduction will describe the conditions of production in which the composers active at this time evolved. The political, religious, cultural and musical foundations of the profane and sacred genres will be described and successively analysed in seminars: madrigal, opera, cantata and oratorio. Certain emblematic works will be the subject of an in-depth study.
Prerequisites :  None
Workshops :  None
Organization :  The course will take place on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 16:00 (first quadrimester).
Written notes :  The musical extracts which are played and analysed during class, are made available to students on the WebCT teaching platform, as well as the lesson plans.
Assessment :  Written exam
