Course contents :  Headed "The imperfect body : diseases, wounds and infirmities in Greek art", the seminar will study the figures of human body marked by imperfections. Using iconographic evidence, the seminar is concerned with artistic and small-scale productions. In Greek art, the physical disabilities resulted in most cases from traumatisms in sport and military actions. But the illustrations are also concerned with pathology and teratology. In these cases, the medical interpretation has to be compared with historical and artistic context. History of art and medical history are so complementary means to study these productions often neglected in Greek art.
Course objective :  In addition to the study of works often neglected in researches on Greek art, the seminar has a double aim. The figures of "imperfect body" will be analysed by a definite method, i.e. an historical study from all ancient evidence, material and literary evidence. Moreover the seminar proposes an introduction to medical history, by some specific concepts required for the interpretation of figures. The seminar will so demonstrate the complementarity of history of art and medical history.
