| Course contents : | Leonardo da Vinci. Examination of his works The works of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) contain a large number of drawings and manuscripts as well as thirty-odd paintings, some irretrievably lost, and others known only through the intermediary of sources; some unfinished, and some completed in collaboration with others in a workshop. The course will retrace Leonardo's career as a painter, concentrating particularly on the artist's creative procedures, the iconographic innovations offered in his paintings, and the success of his inventions. We will also see how Leonardo manages to end up becoming one of the most eminent savants of his day by accomplishing, over and above his paintings, works of civil and military engineering, urbanism, theatre decoration and staging of public celebrations, architecture, sculpture, music and literature. A multi-disciplinary approach is justified in attempting to understand the work of this master: while at first glance the Italian's work appears to be extremely varied, it reveals itself finally to possess perfect coherence. |
| Course objective : | Introduction to scientific monography. The critical approach to works of art and written sources about them from an historical perspective. |
| Prerequisites : | - Having followed the History of Art and Archaeology of the 15th and 16th centuries given in the 1st cycle. - Good knowledge of European history of the 15th and 16th centuries - Capable of using a bibliography partially comprising books or articles in English, Italian and German. |
| Workshops : | Personal research will be required of students. This will be linked to an accurate or free copy created in the style of Leonardo da Vinci by one of his emulators in the 19th century (a work freely chosen by the student). The research ought to open with a 5-8 page review (with notes and bibliography). Moreover, students will have to produce a critical summary of a scientific article to be chosen from a list which will be given to them in due course. Date for submission of work: 7th May 2008. |
| Organization : | Lectures will be given by Mme Laure Fagnart, Recherche du Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique, part of the Service d'Histoire et Technologie des Arts Plastiques (Temps Modernes). They will be followed by discussions in which students will be invited to take part. These seminars will be important for personal written work which students will be asked to submit at the end of the quarter. NB The participation of 'free' students will be limited to lectures and insofar as is possible (in particular the number of vacant seats and balance with regular students) See: http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires |
| Written notes : | There are no course notes. A bibliography and useful documents will be given to students in due course. |
| Assessment : | Other than the examination itself, students will be assessed on their participation in seminars and the two pieces of written work. The oral examination will cover the knowledge and methodological subjects covered during the course. |
| Contacts : | Surgeries (ie meeting without appointment) take place at the Service d'Histoire et Technologie des Arts Plastiques des Temps Modernes : - Wednesdays from 1030 to 1200 (Dominique Allart, lecturer) - Thursdays from 1400 to 1700 (assistants) |
