Course contents :  Research on painting materials focalises on plastic arts, as well as on a great diversity of objects coming from archaeological contexts, ethnographical collections, and even daily used historic objects. All of them form part of the cultural heritage. These can present varied supports such as: textiles, architectural structures, paper, parchment, wood, metals and ceramics. Archaeometry approach focuses on their material, technological and degradation-conservation aspects.

These lectures concern the methodological approach: defining a problematic, observation and examination, considerations on sampling, sample preparation and physicochemical analyses. A general introduction to the history of pigments, from Prehistory to the modern period will be included.

Practical experience will be done in order to seize some of the technological problematic on polychrome objects. Conferences by painting specialists will be integrated to the programme.
Course objective :  To know the vocabulary and concepts associated to the structure of paintings.

To know the variety of problematic linked to the painting materials.

To learn the methodology for approaching research on pictorial techniques.
Prerequisites :  None. A minimum of scientific notions is useful, as well as sense of observation.
Workshops :  Practical experience will be done in order to seize some of the technological problematic on polychrome objects.
Organization :  First semester

30 hours (25 theory and 5 for practical approach).
