Credits/ECTS :
Advanced Master in Risk Management and Well-Being in the WorkplaceToute l'année3
Holder(s) :  Isabelle Hansez
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Partim by C. Hellemans : Coping strategies: from model to professional reality.

To develop a critical and pragmatic view of the notion of coping strategies, and make it functional with regard to the tasks and activities of the employee.

Contents :
Detailed presentation of the coping process as developed in the model by Lazarus and Folkman (1984); the model's three theoretical assumptions (situation, process and transaction) and the failure to respect them in the majority of cases. The work analysis conceptual framework, which helps to enrich the approaches of the coping process; aligning key elements in the work analysis conceptual framework (behaviour, constraints, effects, dynamics) with the coping process model. The 'jd-r' ('Job demands-resources') model: concepts, methods and application

Course objective :  Partim by D. DESMETTE :
Stress and coping: effects linked to diversity (e.g. age, type, ethnic group)

Aim :
To integrate the aspects of stress and coping linked to the diversity in organisations into the analysis

Contents :
On the level of explanatory variables, research into stress and coping in a professional environment integrates work characteristics (e.g. work conditions) and/or the characteristics of the individuals (e.g. type of personality) who perform it. There is little research into the effects of employees' belonging to particular social groups. And yet, this issue is particularly relevant given the growing diversity of the labour force (in terms of type, culture, etc.). Works on social stigmatisation have indeed established that the fact of belonging to a socially undermined group (in the world of work: being a women, a foreigner, an older employee) is a source of stress and may lead to self-handicapping processes which modify an individual's performance and attitudes.

The course aims to deal with certain social stigmatisation processes, their effects in terms of well-being and the coping strategies employees can develop. The analysis will be applied to certain groups of employees and in particular, to older employees and to the theme of ageing at work.
