Course contents :  The course will allow the student to enlarge and strengthen his vision of a world where environmental and natural resources issues will play a more and more important role. The topics that are analyzed are intented to provide progressively to the student the elements and skills that are necessary to meet the challenges that he will be facing as a responsible actor (citizen, consumer, member of an organization or company), at the strategic level as well as on a daily basis.

The course contains 3 parts :

Part 1 : An introduction to the principles and methods of environmental management : historical evolution of public awareness - principles of ecological approach - ecosystems dynamics - biogeochemical cycles - functions of the environment - factors of degradation - state of the environment - objectives of environmental policy - principles used (polluter-pays, precaution, ...) - the instruments of environmental policy - evolution of environmental policies - sustainable development.

Part 2 : "Enterprise and environment" : Environmental management systems (EMAS, ISO14000), Environmental Impact Studies/analysis, Life cycle analysis, eco-labels.

Part 3 : Seminars where environemental managers of industrial companies explain the environmental issues they meet and the solutions adopted.
Course objective :  The objective of the course is twofold :
1) to develop the critical sense and the analysis capacity as regards the environmental and environmental management issues;
2) to learn the objectives, the principles and the methods of sound environmental mangement.
Prerequisites :  There is no pre-requisite to the part 1 and part 2 of the course (the course is based on fundamental notions).
The understanding and knowledge of part 1 and part 2 is a pre-requisite to the part 3.
Workshops :  A personal home-work is asked for to each student : a search and analysis of the content of an internet web-site.
Organization :  Part 1 and part 2 of the course are oral lectures including large interactivity with the students. Some of the lectures will take place in the premises of regional companies.
Part 3 of the course is dedicated to seminars, which consist of presentations and questions-answers. These sessions gain the participation of environmental specialists of companies; they allow the students to meet realistic situation and case-studies. The active participation of the students is asked for.
Written notes :  Lecture notes (ppt) are available for part 1 and part 2 of the course. The notes provide literature and internet sites references.
Part 3 of the course : ppt presentations are generally provided by the environmental managers who participate to these seminars.
Assessment :  The final evaluation consists of an oral exam. A (closed) list of questions is drawn up with the students at the end of the course. During the oral exam, the student presents one of the questions which is randomly selected.
Each student is also asked for to analyze an internet web-site and to present a summary of his analysis.
