GEOL0282-1  Sedimentary and environmental geochemistry
Duration :  20h Th, 20h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Geological and Mining Enginneering, in-deph approach, 2nd yearPremier quadrimestre3
Holder(s) :  Nathalie Fagel
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Study of basic geochemical concepts requested for the interpretation of the geochemical signature of sediment records. Examples from literature and from own projects.
Course objective :  To understand the geochemical approach.

At the end the students should be able to play with some geochemical tools in order to interpret geochemical profiles in sedimentary records, to identify the origin of the main supplies, to decipher between natural and anthropogenic contributions,...
Prerequisites :  basic knowledge of general chemistry and thermodynamics.
Workshops :  TP - Exercice with computer (bring your laptop if any). Calculation from database using simple spreadsheet (e.g., excel).
Organization :  The cursus will be given the first semester. It will be given in 10 times 4 hours (2h theory, 2h exercices).

Theory - Powerpoint presentation of main concept.

TP - Exercice with computer (bring your laptop if any). Calculation from database using simple spreadsheet (e.g., excel).
Written notes :  Copy of slides presented during the lectures, available online from the site www.ulg.ac.be/urap (http://www.ulg.ac.be/urap)
Assessment :  Theory - Individual oral, examination. Comments of figures and/or tables presented during the lectures.

TP (a) Short report of exercices. (b) Personal work Oral presentation (15 minutes) with supports and short written report. Selection of one element or group of erlements. Presentation of its geochemical cycle. Description of the main supplies, the transport pathways. Behaviour during diagenetic burial. Bacterial mediation if any. Assesment of any human perturbation of the natural geochemical cycle.
