Course contents :  Sources and categories of wastes. Collection schemes. Application of unit operations known from mineral processing technology in recycling of solid wastes (mining, metallurgical, post-consumer wastes). Presentation of specific separation units developed for waste processing (shredder, ballistic separators, pneumatic tables, Eddie current separators, optical sorters, X Ray sorting,...). Options for end usage of the different components derived from waste processing - valorisation in terms of energy and materials recovery. Principle flow sheets used for recycling of some important groups of industrial wastes (batteries, WEEE, ELV) and treatment of polluted soils.
Course objective :  By attending the course students will get knowledge about what the recycling industry could learn from the mineral processing industry. The students will be able to understand the basics in elaboration of solid waste treatment technology.

Workshops :  team research work on specific tasks, industrial site visits
Organization :  lectures given in English, group presentation in seminar form, site visits
Written notes :  Lecture material as pdf files distributed at the beginning of the course
Assessment :  written exam
