| Course contents : | Through following the rock cycle, we will cover the geological processes, dwelling on the parts where metal-bearing concentrations can be formed. In this way, the metal-bearing deposits of magmatic, hydrothermal, meteoric, sedimentary, diagenetic, metamorphogenic and metamophic rocks will be covered chronologically. At the end of the course, students should be able to: a) describe for each type of metal-bearing deposit, the following characteristics: 1) the geological environment, including the stratigraphic position of the deposit; 2) the structural or lithological metallotects (controls) of the metal-bearing concentrations; 3) the wall-rock alteration 4) the mineralogy and the mineralogical zonality of the deposit, 5) the shape of the deposit and the nature of its limits 6) the metals for which the deposit is exploited 7) how the deposit arrived in its location b) describe and recognise in the laboratory different types of minerals and typical surrounding rocks. c) With the help of samples, thin-polished sections or sample descriptions, make a geological summary and suggest the type of wall rock being studied and its position in the proposed geological framework. |
| Course objective : | Understand the characteristics of metal-bearing deposits in order to understand how new mineral resources are discovered. |
| Prerequisites : | Basic knowledge of petrography and the ability to identify opaque and translucent minerals through the microscope. |
| Organization : | The subject will be presented over two weeks of intensive classes. These two intensive class sessions will be a few months apart. During the week, the subject will be presented through 3 hours of theory lectures (with Powerpoint) per day. Depending on the availability of samples, thin-polished sections and microscopes at the Ulg, labs will take place in the afternoons. |
| Written notes : | All course material will be available on CD at the beginning of the course. The CD will include 11 Powerpoint presentations which students can print off if they wish. |
| Assessment : | Oral examination at the end of the session on the material covered during the course, samples and thin-polished sections. |
