Master in Geographical Sciences, general orientation, didactic approach, 1st yearToute l'année3
Master in Geographical Sciences, general orientation, specialized approach, 1st yearToute l'année3
Holder(s) :  François Petit
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The major relief features of Belgium are approached by considering the following points : large features of the geological structure; surfaces of erosion in high Belgium; marine transgressions; formation of the hydrographic networks : the Meuse and its tributaries (captures, surimposition, adaptation to the structure, incision of the rivers during Quaternary); the basin of the Scheldt (major hydrographic features, consequent network, quaternary evolution); regional differentiations of the karstic phenomena; coastal deposits and Holocene transgressions; formation of the polders.

The course analyzes then the various physical landscapes in order to propose a differentiation in natural regions, according to the superficial formations and to the large features of the relief and the structure.
Course objective :  This course aims at illustrating, locating and synthesizing the phenomena and processes which were approached in the courses of Geomorphology.
Prerequisites :  Course of Geology, Course of Geomorphology and Hydrography., Course of Regional geography and geomorphology
Workshops :  The two days of field works are held in high Belgium and in the neighbouring areas (Oesling, French Lorraine, French Ardennes). They illustrate some phenomena and processes approached in the theoretical part of the course, particularly the geometry and of the dating of peneplains, the lithological influences on the relief, the tertiary and quaternary planation surfaces.
Organization :  Major relief features in connection with the structure and lithology; planation surfaces in the Ardenne; tectonic movements of the Ardenne; lithological influences in the Cenozoic; the installation of the hydrographic network of the Meuse basin; formation of the hydrographic network of the Scheldt basin; evolution of the rivers during the Quaternary
Written notes :  Regional Geomorphology of Belgium: 88 pages + several papers of synthesis + cartographic documents.
