Duration :  15h Th, 6h Pr, 2d FW
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Geographical Sciences, general orientation, in-depth approach, 1st yearToute l'année3
Master in Geographical Sciences, general orientation, didactic approach, 1st yearToute l'année3
Master in Geographical Sciences, general orientation, specialized approach, 1st yearToute l'année3
Holder(s) :  Geoffrey Houbrechts
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  This course is divided into thematic chapters.
Glaciation: study of the ice in glaciers, and its influence on their surface relief; geomorphology of mountainous regions that were formerly covered with glaciers; geomorphology of the regions that were covered by a nice cap during the Quaternary period.
Periglacial: permafrost and active layer, processes inherent in their respective responses to variations in temperature and pressure (frost cracks; polygonal soils, separated soils, periglacial mounds); particular aspects of behaviour of streams and winds in a periglacial climate, and their morphosedimentary consequences.
Course objective :  To understand the relief of the earth in regions that are or have been affected by the action of glaciers and/or periglacial climates.
Prerequisites :  Basic understanding of physics, geology, and azonal geomorphological processes.
Workshops :  3 two-hour class meetings devoted to the interpretation of topographical maps and aerial photos related to the regions studied in the various chapters of the theoretical part of the course.
Organization :  THEORETICAL COURSE (15 h): the course includes 5 meetings of 3 h total (interruptions additional).
FIELD WORK (4 days): 3 days in the Vosges, essentially devoted to glacial geomorphology (mountain glaciation); 1 day in the Hautes-Fagnes devoted to traces of periglacial geomorphology that are observable there.
Written notes :  Course notes, practical exercises, and field exercises will be handed out in class.
Assessment :  Written theoretical and practical examination, three hours in length; particular importance is given to all documents that illustrate the written notes.
