| Course contents : | 1. Genomics a. Structural genomics b. Functional genomics 2. Bioinformatics: a. Sequence comparison: An introduction to the different software allowing for comparison between two peptide or nucleotide systems will be given and will include: a description of the different databases accessible via the internet, the use of different available software tools (SRS, BLAST, FASTA and CLUSTAL) and statistical analysis of the results. Practical work will also be carried out. b. Gene prediction and annotation of a nucleotide sequence. The different methods of identifying a coding phase in a nucleotide sequence will be presented as well as a software tool to annotate a nucleotide sequence, resulting from a genome sequencing project. Moreover, the different tools facilitating searching for "signals" (RBS, terminators, searching for a motif, ...) which exist along the length of a nucleotide chain will also be presented. The practical work associated with this module will enable students to use the software tools presented during the theory course. c. Predicting a function from a sequence Using a peptide sequence derived from a nucleotide sequence, different software tools enabling functions to be predicted will be presented. These include: searching for a peptide motif which represents the signature of an enzyme family or function (screening for motifs on the ProSite database), or the comparison of a peptide sequence with a consensus sequence derived from a multiple alignment (Screening using the Pfam database) ... d. Statistical analysis of micro-array data In order to avoid erroneous interpretation of the results obtained during a DNA-array, a statistical method will be presented as well as the mistakes which should be avoided. |
 |
| Assessment : | The format of the exam will be given on the notice board at the Faculté des Sciences office at some point during the 1st semester. |
