Course contents :  This course deals with various accidental and exceptional actions. Their effects on buildings and civil engineering structures are described as well as the way in which these structures could be designed in order to offer a satisfactory behaviour.

The concept of structural robustness is first introduced. The following items are then treated successively: floodings, landslides, impacts, explosions, wind and tornadoes and then, in a more detailled manner, eartquakes and fires.
Course objective :  To give to the students the basic informations that will allow them to design a building that will behave correctly against two accidental actions, namely eartquakes and fire. To give them the principles of the calculation methods that are used to design for these actions.

To give them informations on the principle of structural robustness seen as the first line of defence against exceptionnal actions, a certain number of which have been described.
Prerequisites :  Good understanding of structural mechanics. Some ideas about heat transfer and dynamic behaviour.
Workshops :  Some simple exercices, either demonstrated to the students or to be done by them, about eartquakes and fire.
Organization :  Timeschedule foreseen in 2008-2009
