| Course contents : | This course describes a series of hazard to which building structures can be submitted. It explains their effects on buildings and the way in which these structures could be designed in order to offer a satisfactory behaviour and achieve safety to the persons. The following items are treated successively: earthquakes, flooding, fires, landslides, wind, tornadoes, impact, explosion. A stress is put on seismic design and fire design. The concept of structural robustness seen as the first line of defence against exceptional actions is introduced. |
| Course objective : | To give to the students the basic information that will allow them to design a building that will behave correctly against accidental actions. To give them the principles of the calculation methods that are used to design for these actions. |
| Prerequisites : | Good understanding of strength of materials and of structural mechanics. |
| Workshops : | Some simple exercices, either demonstrated to the students or to be done by them, about eartquakes and fire. |
| Organization : | Schedule in 2008-2009. Wednesday morning from 17/09/08 to 22/10/08. |
| Written notes : | Written notes shall be available. |
| Assessment : | Oral Examination. A list of subjects defining the items to study will be distributed. |
