| ENVT2014-1 | Physical-chemical and microbiological quality parameters of surface and underground water
| Duration : | 30h Th, 6h Pr |
| Credits/ECTS : |
| Holder(s) : | J.P. Barthélemy, Louis Leclercq, Françis Rosillon |
| Language : | Langue française |
| Course contents : | Partim Physical chemistry - essential characteristics of physical chemistry - the most widely used analytic techniques Partim Microbiology - Introduction to the microbiology of the environment (importance of microbiology, characterization of viruses, bacteria and protozoans, algaes, growth and metabolism) - Microbial ecology of aquatic environments - Techniques for sampling and microbiological analysis of water: virology, bacteriology, parasitology - Aspects of expertise in the area of the microbiology of water - Applications in developing countries (PEDs) - Practical work in the field and in the laboratory Partim Diatoms - Theoretical and practical approach to the use of diatoms as bio-indicators of eutrophization and organic pollution. |
| Course objective : | - to become aware of the importance of physico-chemical and microbiological aspects of water - to understand why diatomea give a very precise bioindication of the chemical quality of natural waters (trophic degree) and polluted waters (levels of eutrophisation and organic pollution, in relation to geology and human presence in watersheds). - to build expertise and establish a microbiological diagnosis of water quality. |
| Prerequisites : | - Knowledge of basic biology - Basic understanding of chemistry and biochemistry |
| Workshops : | Microbiology section - Field work: taking samples - Seeding and identification of the main bacteria of faecal contamination - Drafting a report Diatomea section Harvesting, processing and presenting samples, microscopic observation, exercises using didactic software for the management of watersheds means that case studies and learning about the diatomea systems can take place simultaneously. Physico-chemistry section FSAGx lab |
| Organization : | Microbiology section 6 hours of theory 3 hours of field work for sampling 3 hours of practical work: seeding and identification Diatomea section Takes the form of a residential seminar lasting 3 days (jointly with the ENVT2015 course) at the Station Scientifique des Hautes-Fagnes (ULg) Physico-chemical section 12 hours (classes at the FSAGx) |
| Written notes : | - Powerpoint slideshow - Web references - Course notes (diatomea section): downloadable from http://www.cifen.ulg.ac.be/inforef/expeda/eureau/outils.html |
| Assessment : | - Written report - Written exam (closed book) |
