| Course contents : | 1st part. Modelling of components and controls.
- dynamics of synchronous generator : time constants, inductances, state equations, per unit system, rotor motion
- power system modelling under the quasi-sinusoidal approximation
- induction machine: modelling and behaviour following a disturbance
- turbines and speed governors: thermal power plants, hydro power plants
- excitation systems and automatic voltage regulators
- static var compensators
- series compensation: fixed and variable (FACTS devices).
2nd part. Stability
- power system stability: definitions, relationships with system theory
- small-signal angle stability: analysis of a one-machine infinite-bus system, analysis of a general system, modal analysis. Stability improvement: design of controllers for oscillation damping, mainly the PSS
- transient (angle) stability: analysis (equal area criterion) and improvement
- frequency stability
- voltage stability: analysis of short-term and long-term instability mechanisms, stability improvement. Demonstration of the ASTRE software.
