| Course contents : | Industrial economics studies competition between firms and the strategies that firms undertake to acquire or increase their market power. For example, investing in R&D, merger or the pricing policy.
The industrial economics class uses the instruments developed in the micro class. The course will be based on economic models and will be illustrated by numerous examples.
Course outline:
1. From perfect competition to monopoly Regulated monopoly and market liberalization 2. Oligopoly 3. Acquiring market power: price and non-price strategies Prices, vertical relations, advertising, product differentiation 4. Entry and exit Predatory pricing, barriers to entry 5. Technology, R&D and patents 6. Network industries (telecommunication, airlines) |
