| Course contents : | Contemporary capitalist systems will mainly be studied from the point of view of the following themes: on the one hand, the control and behaviour of enterprises and economic integration; on the other hand, the various functions of the state in the economy.
Central and Eastern European economies will be analysed through the heritage of collectivism and the current structural mutations (privatisations, opening of markets etc.). Ongoing transformations of some other major economies will be explored as well. |

| Course objective : | The goal of the seminar is twofold:
- firstly, to offer an introduction to the comprehension of fundamental mechanisms regulating western economies, the Central and Eastern European transition economies as well as some major emerging economies. In this sense, this seminar aims to concretise the more theoretical teaching of the political economy course;
- secondly, to teach the students how to conduct a scientific personal investigation. |

| Prerequisites : | An introductory course to political economy |
|
| Workshops : | Groups of two students have to write a paper about structural transformations undergone by a national economy they may choose (Central and East European countries, China, India, Japan, ...) |
|

| Assessment : | The evaluation will be based on three elements:
- a written exam on the whole syllabus;
- the work carried out for the personal presentation and the quality of the latter;
- participation in debates. |
