| Course contents : | This course analyses the economic realities which are part of what is more and more frequently called the "third sector", i.e. a sector which is distinct from the traditional private sector and from the public sector. The third sector mainly brings together enterprises belonging to the co-operative movement, mutual organisations and above all activities with an economic relevance carried out by associations (formal non-profit organisations, on the one hand, and informal associations, on the other hand). These realities are often poorly understood from an economic point of view although they represent a significant part of employment in industrialised countries. In a different way but even more importantly, they are also crucial and bear great hopes in developing economies where they are generally rooted in local communities and prove to be crucial in LDCs where the public sector has decreased a lot and the formal private sector is concentrated in profitable industries and areas. In order to apprehend these realities, which are often poorly known and whose importance is usually strongly undervalued, two main types of approaches are used complementarily: on the one hand, approaches based on the concept of the social economy, and on the other hand, those based on the notion of "non-profit organizations" (NPOs). Both approaches have generated a large amount of theoretical and empirical literature since the second half of the 70s. A few other conceptual and analytical frameworks are also exploited: the concept of "non-market sector"(widely used in the Belgian context), the French approach of the solidarity-based economy ("économie solidaire") end the emerging theories of social enterprise. |
| Course objective : | The goal of this seminar is to introduce analytical grids to improve the knowledge of the - often poorly known - realities of the third sector (social economy) and to help understand their specificities. |
| Prerequisites : | General political economy course |
| Organization : | A first series of lectures is devoted to the introduction to the main conceptual and theoretical approaches. Subsequently, the other classes are organised as follows: two or three students present a major theme on the basis of a few articles and two other students act as "discussants". A general debate is then conducted by the teacher. |
| Written notes : | Book of reference:Defourny, J., Develtere, P. & Fonteneau, B. (eds), "L'économie sociale au Nord et au Sud", Bruxelles: De Boeck, 1999. Also published in English and Spanish.
A "collection of texts" bringing together the articles serving as a basis for the introductory classes and above all to the lectures by the students.
Advised references: A list of books are "set aside" and put to the disposal of students at the CIRIEC (B33, second floor). |
| Assessment : | The final evaluation is based on four elements: the quality of the presentation prepared; the quality of the "discussion" of the presentation made by other students; the participation in the debates; and an oral exam. |
