Course contents :  The course aims to place the contemporary realities of work in a historical perspective, and to initiate the students in the practice of historical research.

The course is made up of two parts.

After a brief reminder of the characteristics of the historical process and the contribution it can make to students and researchers in the social sciences, the first part of the course begins with an overview of the industrialisation process in Belgium since the Industrial Revolution. Looking at things from a company point of view it describes the principal changes in the organisation of work since the end of the 19th century. It then deals with the legal status of subordinate workers, the birth and development of individual work rights, the Belgian system of collective work relations, before finally dealing with the social security system placed in its economic and historical context.

The second part of the course takes the form of a condensed historical seminar where the students are called upon to deal with a precise point relating to a historical question. In 2008-2009, the seminar will deal with health at work.

Assessment will consist of a discussion, in the light of the course, on written work handed in at the end of the seminar
