| Course contents : | This course deals with the international dimension of EU's action. The relevant institutional framework will be explained. The various instruments of external action will be presented and the way they are deployed in each field of external action will be studied. EU will be envisaged as an international actor in the making. The course will cover historically important fields of EU international relations, such as trade and cooperation, as well as more recently developed areas of EU involvement, such as environment, promotion of human rights and peace keeping. Relations with neighbouring countries will also be examined. |

| Course objective : | This course aims at giving students an overview of EU's external action. At the end of the course, students should be able to put in perspective developments of EU's international action in the fields covered by the course. |

| Prerequisites : | Basic knowledge of EU institutional structure and decision making processes. |
 |
| Organization : | This course is offered in the second term. Students will be asked to read various types of materials and dicuss them in class. |
 |
| Written notes : | Students will be given a course outline. Written notes will be available for certain chapters only. Slides used in the lecture will be available to students via WebCT. In addition, a booklet containing reading materials will be available. |

| Assessment : | Written exam. |
