Duration :  20h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Advanced Master in European LawToute l'année3
Holder(s) :  Nicolas Petit
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The course intends to help students master the economic foundations of the competition laws.
It starts with an introduction to mainstream economic theories: classical and

neo-classical price theory, monopoly and oligopoly theories, principal-agent theory, transaction costs economics, natural monopoly, market failure, public choice theory, etc.
It subsequently reviews the concepts and instruments used when dealing with the economics of competition law: concepts of welfare, efficiencies, costs, prices, barriers to entry, etc.
Finally, the course discusses the three main types of "strategic behaviours" that are caught by the competition laws, i.e. (i) the exploitation of market power (cartels, discriminations and excessive prices); (ii) the protection/expansion of market power (various exclusionary practices); and

(iii) the acquisition of market power (through horizontal , vertical and conglomerate mergers).
A list of selected readings is provided to the students before each class.
