| CLIM0008-1 | Regional climate modelling
| Duration : | 30h Th, 20h Pr |
| Credits/ECTS : |
| Holder(s) : | Xavier Fettweis, Louis François |
| Language : | Langue française |
| Course contents : | The lectures begin with a quick introduction to regional climate modelling (by Xavier Fettweis) where problems connected to the choice of the integration domain, the pre-/post-possessing, the double nesting, the 2-way coupling, ... are presented.
Then, the modelling of the vegetation is presented by Louis François. It includes the modelling of the exchanges of heat, water and CO2 between the soil, the vegetation and the atmosphere, as well as the processes governing the dynamic evolution of the vegetal cover (leaf area index, vegetation types, etc.).
Finally, the tutorials introduce the students to the use of the MM5 regional climate model, the outputs of which will be used to force a vegetation model, (ASPECTS and\or CARAIB), on a particular region of Europe. |
| Course objective : | The objective of the lectures is to introduce the students to the use of complex climate models. |
| Prerequisites : | - SPAT0024 Meteorology - CLIM0002 Climate models: principles and applications - CLIM0010 Fortran and Linux for the climatologist |
| Workshops : | The tutorials will be dedicated to the use and handling of the MM5 regional model, as well as one vegetation model (ASPECTS or CARAIB). |
| Organization : | The lectures are organized in 3-hour modules. Computers under Linux are used for the tutorials. |
| Written notes : | The pdf files of the lecture slides are available for the students.
Reference articles of the MM5, ASPECTS and CARAIB models are presented to the students during the first lesson. |
| Assessment : | Every student has to model a particular domain of Europe and is evaluated on the basis of the (oral and written) presentation of the results he obtained in the tutorials. |
