Course contents :
Introduction to spectroscopy

Introduction to atomic and molecular spectroscopy: (i) basic quantum models; (ii) atomic spectroscopy; (iii) vibrational molecular spectroscopy; (iv) electronic spectroscopy; (v) magnetic resonance spectroscopies (nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance). This basic course aims at helping the student in applying spectroscopy to organic, inorganic and analytical problems.
Course objective :
Introduction to spectroscopy

At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to choose the relevant spectroscopic approach to solve a given simple problem and to infer as much information as possible from the experimental data.
Prerequisites :
Introduction to spectroscopy

Freshman chemistry and physics courses.
Workshops :
Introduction to spectroscopy

There is no laboratory work foreseen for this course. Problem-solving classes are organized.
Organization :
Introduction to spectroscopy

10 two-hour lectures during the second quadrimester
Written notes :
Introduction to spectroscopy

Lecture notes and copies of the powerpoint slides will be available.
Assessment :
Introduction to spectroscopy

Written (numerical problems) and oral examinations
