| Course contents : | In the solid state, the nuclear spin interactions act simultaneously leading usually to a broad featureless spectrum (chapter 1). Such interactions may be cancelled or significantly reduced by line narrowing techniques (Chapter 2). Useful suppressed interactions may be selectively reintroduced by appropriate pulse sequences (Chapter 3). A better signal dispersion is obtained by using two-dimensional NMR techniques, improving data analysis (Chapter 4). These experiments are mainly focused on structural information of the investigated systems. Molecular dynamics may also be described by NMR since mobility differences influence the relaxation parameters (Chapter 5). The last chapter introduces flow studies and magnetic resonance imaging. These chapters are illustrated by appropriate examples depending on the interest of the students.
Chapter 1: External and internal interactions in NMR spectroscopy Chapter 2: Spectral simplification by signal narrowing techniques Chapter 3: Selective recoupling methods of NMR interactions Chapter 4: Bi(multi)-dimensional NMR techniques Chapter 5: Relaxation processes and their use for studying interphases (interfaces) Chapter 6: Use of magnetic field gradients |
| Course objective : | The aim is to supply the students with the required tools to understand NMR papers and to choose the useful NMR experiment(s) in their research. |
| Prerequisites : | Background theory of NMR spectrocopy given in the courses of the bachelor degree. |
| Organization : | Lectures following a time-table decided with the students. |
| Written notes : | The copies of the Powerpoint file and transparencies are provided before each lecture. The appropriate references are included in these documents. |
| Assessment : | Based on the presentation and discussion of an article from literature. |
