CHIM0071-3  Reduction of pollutants from combustion
Duration :  30h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Chemical Engineering and Materrial Sciences, in-depth approach, 2nd yearPremier quadrimestre3
Holder(s) :  Angélique Léonard
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Local and global pollution. Combustion, the source of atmospheric pollution. Thermodynamics and emission kinetics of the principal pollutants of combustion: carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxide, oxidised organic compounds, aromatic polycylclic hydrocarbons, soot and ash. Combustion and global pollutants. Disturbance of natural cycles by combustion pollutants: acid rain, greenhouse effect, hole in the stratospheric ozone, tropospheric ozone.
Regulatory norms: their relevance and application.
Methodology and techniques for reducing combustion pollutants: treatment of combustibles before combustion, reduction of pollutant emissions through optimising the operation of the burner, treatment of smoke during or after combustion. Application to carbon, sulphur and nitrogen oxides, and to soot and ash. Problem of waste products of CO2: reduction in emissions, capture. Advanced techniques in electrical production from coal.
Course objective :  Discussion of all possible options for converting chemical energy into thermal energy while minimising the production of pollutants.
Prerequisites :  Bachelor of Civil Engineering or equivalent and basic notions of thermochemistry and the kinetics of fossil fuel combustion.
Workshops :  Integrated into the oral presentation.
Organization :  The course takes place on Tuesday mornings for the last seven weeks of the first quarter.
Written notes :  Electronic version of the course and collection of overheads.
Assessment :  Oral examination during the January session.
