CHIM0008-1  Advanced general and physical chemistry
Duration :  40h Th, 40h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
civil engineering in chemist, 3rd year-
Holder(s) :  Robert Locht
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The lecture is devided in two parts: 1. Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy. (a) Basic pinciples of atomic spectroscopy , study of atomic spectra and special effects. (b) Study of the intramolecular motions and the molecular electronic structure: examination of molecular spectra in the wavelength regions of microwave, IR, UV-visible and extreme UV: description of the NMR, EPR UVPES and XPES techniques. 2. Statistical Thermodynamics: (a) Study of the different classical and quantum statistics, of the partition fonctions and the various thermodynamic fonctions . (b) Applications: the Bose-Einstein condensation, superconductivity, introduction to the solid state, gaseous and liquid mixtures, chemical équilibria. Application to the chemical kinetics.
Course objective :  - Theoretical and and descriptive introduction to the various spectroscopic techniques as applied to atoms and molecules.
- Evaluation of the thermodynamic fonctions using the statistical mechanical méthods. Application to various fields in Physics and extension to the field of chemical kinetics.
Prerequisites :  Basic concepts on atomic and molecular structure acquired during the bachelor degree.
Workshops :  40 hours of Chemical Physics laboratory work (5days of 8 hours).
Organization :  40 hours of lectures divided into 20 h of spectroscopiy and 20h of thermodynamics.
Written notes :  For the lectures, notes are published in extenso and available for the two parts separately.
Practical laboratory work is based on building experiments resulting from a preliminary bibliographic research.
Assessment :  Theoretical lecture: written exams on both parts (almost consisting of applications)
Practical laboratory work: évaluation based on performance in the laboratory, oral and written reports.
