| Course contents : | The first partim of General Biochemistry brings an overview of chemical reactions ongoing in cells. Program is divised in five parts :
1. Introduction to the cells chemical reactions
2. Protein structure and biological membranes.
3. Metabolism
4. Information storage and utilization
5.Cell mechanical work |

| Course objective : | 1. To give information on the broad outline of the chemical reactions being held inside the cell, insisting on biochemistry of proteins (a Molecular Biology course will be given later)
2. To allow the students to approach thereafter the courses of general and human physiology on a solid basis of knowledge in biochemistry.
3. To approach the actual techniques used in the laboratories, once again while insisting on the techniques of handling of proteins.
4. To develop the critical point of view of the students by exposing the facts pro and countered certain assumptions still incompletely checked at the present time. |

| Prerequisites : | General biology, general cytology, chemistry and physics |

| Workshops : | Three sessions are organized during the six-month period and which relate to the techniques of handling of proteins: chromatography, proteins quantification, enzymatic activity measurement and electrophoresis |

| Written notes : | Notes were written in 2005-2006 and then have been brought up to date. The students will also have access trough MyULg to the files of notes and of illustrations of the lectures. Lastly, addresses and the accesses to several web sites specialized in this field will be given to the students. A book of PW will be also available at the first information lecture. |

| Assessment : | Written and oral examination on the lectures, practical works and seminar is organized according to the general program of the studies. |
