| Course contents : | This course presents, in a critical way, the tools and methods used in town planning: from the hygienist theories through to the creation of a rational framework in terms of land development. It gradually puts this framework into question in order to develop contemporary ideas of urban sustainability and the urban project, as well as the articulation between analysis and urban programming. The course addresses the emergence of the notion of sustainability in the 1990s and its application to the field of town planning. It then sets out the tools and methods applicable to this domain. |
| Course objective : | 1- To introduce students to the theories and methods applicable to the design and implementation of a sustainable urban project, on the town district scale. 2- To lead students to develop a critical discourse relating to the tools and methods proposed in the field of urban sustainability. |
| Prerequisites : | ARCH2008-1 Design and planning of urban areas ARCH2002-2 Urban and regional planning |
| Workshops : | The practical work proposed involves the analysis of existing sites, on a small or large scale and the projection of urban buildings. The definition of the project covers the entire process of urban design, from the creation of a diagnosis through to the legal and financial organisation. At the end of the exercise, students will formalise their terms of reference for future operations without going into the architectural design. The entire gamut of operational components of town planning are liable to be used within the framework of this work. |
| Organization : | The theory course is organised around the following structure. 1- The challenges of sustainable town planning: the Bruntland report and the Liepzig Charter on Sustainable European Cities; the challenges of urban sustainability. 2- Reference frameworks: Local Agenda 21 and strategic studies in terms of the environment. 3- Methods, indicators and tools: the indicators of sustainable development (design indicators, follow-up indicators and benchmarking), the analysis of life-cycles on the town district scale. 4- Devices and practices: urban sustainability and citizen participation, exchange of good practice as a new method of urban intervention. |
| Written notes : | Overheads used in class are given to students. Before each course, students are asked to read one or two introductory texts in the area. |
| Assessment : | Assessment is based upon a written exam. |
