| Course contents : | Workshop learning builds knowledge of architecture - not based on rules, norms or doctrines of composition, but based upon the representative concepts, which allow students to master and structure the complexity of reality. This idea is both a tool for analysis and an active part of "projection".
Architecture workshops should at first teach students how to think. B. DONNADIEU and D. SPINETTA call this "training in observation". As they explain, it consists of "... demonstrating, through several examples on different scales and for different functions, that objects, pieces of furniture, spaces and architectural volumes can be analysed and broken down into articulated sub-groups ..."
Students will learn to organise their thinking hierarchically, and on that basis to simplify their actions in order to respond in a pertinent way to specific requests. Thus will they develop the skills required for composition.
Workshops are held over four years of study. The themes treated deal progressively with spatial scale and increasing degrees of constraint. |
 |
| Course objective : | The architectural challenge developed over the course of this workshop is that of a single-family dwelling.
The student must be able to propose coherent solutions integrating all relevant architectural constraints, notably programming, spatial ambience and relationship to the site. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | Course entitled Introduction to graphic composition and expression ARCH0066-01
Course entitled Technical elements of building construction 1 ARCH0003-04
Course entitled Methodology of architectural projects ARCH0002-01
Course in Graphic Communication MATH0001-01 |
 |
| Workshops : | Practical sessions take place in the architectural workshop room in building B52 at Sart Tilman. |
 |
| Organization : | Courses take place throughout the year.
Courses are given in the form of discussions around projects ("workshops"). Proactive student participation in the practical sessions is required.
Seminars will reflect the projects studied.
Site visits and building visits will be organised over the year (two or three visits per year).
An architectural study tour for a few days (open to all five years) is organised before Easter. This is a good chance to see, live and breathe architecture, through discussion between students or with workshop leaders. |
 |
| Assessment : | Course assessment comprises exercises carried out over the year and a practical end-of-year exam. Defence of projects will take place before a jury.
The second session annuls the grading from the first session. The student will have the opportunity to re-present exercises where a score of at least 10/20 has not been achieved.
There is also a practical examination during the second session. |
