| Course contents : | Workshop instruction in this course will provide knowledge about architecture - not as based on rules, norms or doctrines of composition, but as based on representative concepts that allow students to master and structure the complexity of the real. The concept is an instrument of analysis and a means of planning-projection-action all at once. Architecture workshops should at first teach students how to think. B. DONNADIEU and D. SPINETTA call this the education of one's seeing. As they maintain, it is a matter of "...showing, through many examples, at different scales and for different functions, that objects, pieces of furniture, spaces and volumes in architecture and be analyzed and broken up into articulated sub-groupings..." Students will learn to hierarchize their thinking, and on that basis to simplify action in order to act in a pertinent manner in response to a specific request. They will in this way develop the know-how required in the act of composition. Workshops are held during four of the years of study. The themes treated focus progressively on an increasing spatial scale and degree of constraint. |
