Course contents :  Originally the first area to be investigated in the history of the discipine (which was declared to be « in crisis » or even obscelete by some in the 20th century), the anthropology of parenting today attracts more attention. Indeed, more than ever, it appears to be necessary in order to understand the dynamics of contemporary society. The (interactive) presentation of methodological tools and the analysis of problems on the one hand and reflection on debates relating to the concepts and theories developed over time on the other, will focus attention upon societies in both the north and the south. The accent will be particularly upon contemporary developments in this domain.
In particular, approaches which focus on the concept and use of parenting, as well as work focusing on changes to the family in different parts of the world, pseudo-parenting (ritual parenting, reconstituted families ...), parentality or even medically-assisted procreation will be studied.

Course materials : texts, lectures, films ...
Course objective :  Students will acquire a good knowledge of this field and the main debates around it. They will be capable of using theoretical and methodological tools presented during the course (parenting practices) and will be able to identify them on the ground.
Prerequisites :  None
Organization :  The course will take place in the first quarter.
Written notes :  Course materials : texts, lectures, films ...

Students will receive articles and extracts from publications, a selective bibliography and filmography as well as a list of websites (written and video material).
Assessment :  Students will create a thematic report which they will present orally and a final written report (instructions for these two exercises will be given in class).
Contacts :  I meet with students by appointment. (Elodie.Razy@ulg.ac.be).
