Course contents :  This course will present currents of thought and major authors that have been influential in the history of economic anthropology during the 20th century, proceeding in terms of main themes. First, we will cover the theme of exchanges, discussing the opposition between gifts and exchanges based on agreed value, market economics in bazaars, and money. Second, we will analyze the theme of production in various aspects, from techniques to the relation to labor, passing by way of the question of discipline. Third, we will consider consumption not only in relation to the first two themes, but also as related to the problematic of identity construction.

After having studied these three classic themes of economic anthropology (production, exchange, consumption), we will finish the course by considering the relationship between economics and politics, and by looking at the great economic transformations of our time.
