| Course contents : | General overview: The anthropology of childhood is built on the crossroads of many disciplines (psychology, psycho-analysis, sociology, history, educational sciences ...) which it relates to differently depending on national academic tradition (USA, Great Britain, France, Germany ...). New trends are emerging, notably in Latin America, which is an active participant in the short history of this developing field. This will be outlined by focusing on different themes and/or approaches (social construction and symbolism of the child, the status of the child, child development, ideas about childhood, day to day life, the idea of the «child-actor», culture towards children, the idea of «agency», engaging the child in the cycle of life ...) to different societies both in the north and south.
Methodological, theoretical and epistemological questions which the anthropology of childhood throws up will also be tackled. More widely, this will involve grasping what the anthropology of childhood can contribute to a better understanding of the societies being studied and of mankind in general. |

| Course objective : | Students will acquire a good knowledge of the history of this developing field and reasons for why it has developed differently in the United State, in Great Britain and in France as well as the emerging trends in this field. This will learn, from examples presented in class, how to develop an argument on the different metholodological, theoretical and epistemological questions raised by the different approaches found in the publications studied. They will be capable of, among other things, reconstructing and analysing an observation centred on children. |

Students will receive articles and extracts from publications, a selective bibliography and filmography as well as a list of websites (written and video material). |

| Assessment : | Students will create a thematic report which they will present orally and a final written report on their observation (instructions on these two exercises will be given during class). |
