Course contents :  This course will be in seminar form. Students will present their work on a problematic that development organizations are confronted with in the field. In the beginning, students will be given a list of themes, guidance on how to get to work, and advice about sources to consult. Then, while preparing their work in the library, they will attend a series of classes on the relationship between anthropology and development efforts. At the end of this introduction, students will take turns presenting their work via oral presentations to the seminar.
Course objective :  The objective of the course is to place students in the situation of a consultant who provides an anthropological analysis of a question that directly concerns development organizations or agencies: food supply, refugees, physical handicaps, etc. In order to produce such analyses, student consultants must be able to find pertinent information, to take a critical distance with regard to existing literature, and to develop argumentation that is both synthetic and substantial in bibliographic terms. They will also have to show their abilities as regards delivery of public presentations.
Prerequisites :  To want to contribute to the dialogue between development actors and social scientists
Workshops :  Details about the writing assignment will be given during the first class
Organization :  The course takes place during the first term, on Tuesdays from 15h30 to 17h30, in the Séminaire 11 room.
Assessment :  Grading is based on a paper, an oral presentation, and class participation.
Contacts :  I am available to meet with students by appointment (brubbers@ulg.ac.be). Office location: R.94, niveau 0, bâtiment B.31, at Sart-Tilman.
