ANTH0032-1  Advanced Questions in Cultural Anthropology

Credits/ECTS :
Master in Sociology and AnthropologyDeuxième quadrimestre6
Holder(s) :  Marc Lenaerts
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The course will mainly be based on Amazonian examples, and will deal with the relations between symbolic thought and daily practices. For a long time, ethnographic studies have tended to be approached as two quite separate domains, especially since the wealth of data and their "exoticism" seemed to justify separate analysis. And yet, practice in the field has shown that they are in fact closely linked: cosmological conceptions have very concrete (and sometimes very disconcerting) implications on the most prosaic perceptions, views and actions. Examples will be analysed in various domains: interethnic relations, perception of natural beings (plants, animals and "supernatural" beings), perception of territory and space, ethnomedicine, etc. We will then come to the numerous questions such an approach raises, especially as regards ethnobotany, anthropology and cognitive psychology, the definition of "culture", or notions of "modernity" and change.
Course objective :  Based on detailed ethnographic examples, the course encourages students to think about the relations between symbolic anthropology and applied anthropology, and several openings in interdisciplinary research.
