| Course contents : | This course introduces aerospace engineering students to subsystem design in engineering spacecraft. The course presents characteristic subsystems, such as propulsion, electrical power, structure and mechanisms, thermal control, attitude control and telecommunications, and analyzes the engineering trades necessary to integrate subsystems successfully into a satellite.
Instructors from both academia and industry (e.g., ESA and Thales Alenia Space) deliver lectures in this course. |
 |
| Course objective : | See above |
 |
| Prerequisites : | None a priori |
 |
| Workshops : | Students will be assigned one project. The objective of the projet will be to analyze and synthetize a phase A document (i.e., feasibility study) of a real space mission (e.g., Solar Orbiter) |
 |
| Organization : | 1st semester |
 |
| Written notes : | Textbook: P. Fortescue, J. Stark, G. Swinerd, Spacecraft Systems Engineering, 3rd edition, 2003. |
 |
| Assessment : | The final grade will be based on the project report and the oral exam:
1. Group of two students will be assigned a project. The grade will be based on the quality of the synthesis and the analysis of subsystem interactions.
2. During the oral exam, the students will have to show a solid knowledge and understanding of the different subsystems. No mathematical proofs will have to be demonstrated. The oral exam will also include the individual presentation of the project report. It will comprise three sequences:
- Questionnaire with 10 questions : 25 minutes.
- Presentation of the project report : 10 minutes.
- Discussion: 15 minutes.
Student assessment criteria:
- Oral exam and project report: 70% and 30%.
September exams: same terms, but, if the grade of the project report is below 12/20, the student will be assigned a new project. |
