Course contents :  This course is subdivided in two parts of 30 hours each.

In the first part, we start by giving an introduction to descriptive statistical methods which permit to summarize a data set either graphically or numerically. Then we turn to inferential statistics, the basis of scientific reasoning, which consist in making conclusions on a population from a random sample drawn from it. The student will learn about classical statistical tests and the use of statistical tables (random numbers, Normal, Student t, Snedecor F and chi-squared distributions).

The second part of the course tackles more advanced statistical methods, like regression, one-way and two-way analysis of variance, contingency tables and non-parametric techniques.
Course objective :  The course is intended to get students familiar with biostatistical problems and data analysis. Emphasis is placed on the scientific reasoning rather than on the mathematical aspects of statistics or the formula to use. Students in Public Health sciences should have a sufficiently solid knowledge in statistics for the years ahead, and in particular for the thesis they have to write at the end of their curriculum.
Prerequisites :  The mathematical training received in highschool and in higher education schools is sufficient to take the course. As already mentioned, emphasis is placed the potential of statistical methods in experimental design and scientific research.
Workshops :  The practical sessions are compulsory and will take place separately. Exercises can be finished at home if necessary.
Organization :  The course will be given in a single block over a 6-week period (2 courses per week). The exact time schedule can be seen on the website of the School of Public Health.
Written notes :  Students will have to buy the lecture notes "Biostatistics, A. Albert, edition 2005" at Point de Vue near the large lecture halls at the price of 15 EUR. This book contains the course material as well as the main statistical tables. It will be used during exercise sessions and at the final examination. Finally, it can be used as a reference book in biostatistics in subsequent years.

Assessment :  A written exam will take place in January. It lasts for about 4 hours. Any score of 10 or more will be considered as a success. All exams are written exams and students can used their lectures notes or any other documents. Exams are scored 0-20.

Exercises will be evaluated regularly to assess the student's level in statistics.
