Course contents :  The course tries to reach two essential purposes. By leaning on tangible historic and sociological data, the course aims at introducing the students, on one hand, to the knowledge of certain aspects of the Arabian-Islamic cultures and on the other hand, to the acquisition of a critical spirit allowing the re-examination of their certainties and stereotypes.
Course objective :  Initiation into the study of the contemporary Arabian-Islamic cultures in their connections with the western cultures. Are these cultures condemned to confrontation, as claimed by the American political analyst Samuel P. Huntington? Is this era the one of a " shock of civilizations "? The answer to these questions and the analysis of connections between the cultures is the main thread of the course.
Organization :  Interactive teaching. An active participation of the students is necessary.
Written notes :  Texts will be given to the students.
Assessment :  Oral examination
