PHYS0047-1  Additional issues in the physics of condensed states
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
civil engineering in physics, 2nd year5,5
Holder(s) :  Marcel Schmeits
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  This course is devoted to the study of the physics of semiconducting optoelectronic devices. Fundamental properties of semiconductors are briefly recalled. The mechanisms of light absorption and light emission by semiconductors are presented in detail. An extensive study is made of the most important devices: light emitting diodes, laser diodes, photon detectors and solar cells. Integrated optics and photonic crystals are the subject of the last chapters.
Course objective :  The main objective is to present the physical basis of optoelectronic devices. This allows to explain the dependence of the characteristics of each device on its structure and on the microscopic properties of the materials used, with the final aim to optimize the performances of the device.
Prerequisites :  Introduction to solid state physics, quantum physics, statistical physics. Physical Electronics.
Workshops :  Laboratory sessions and literature work.
Organization :  Course given during the second quadrimester, 4 hours per week.
Written notes :  Lecture notes are available.
Assessment :  Oral examination in June.
