| Course contents : | Design process - Iterative nature, design office versus method office, machine subsets and elements. Exigencies upon functionality, reliability and cost.
Functionality - Dimensions, standards, interchangeability, dimensional chains; dimensional tolerances, geometrical tolerances. Link with the mechanism hyperstaticity. Roughness. Stifness exigencies. Friction : adhesion, bolts, hooping, belts, brakes ; sticking, stick-slip, wear ; how to reduce frictional effects. Design for asssembly and disassembly. Reciprocal dependance of shapes and manufacturing processes.
Reliability - Forces evaluation, first design of a shaft, general reliability concepts, mechanical tests of materials, stress limit assesment, the concept of safety. Volumic strength with static and dynamic loads. Hertzian contacts. Rolling bearing calculation. |
| Course objective : | The purpose of this course is primarily to present the bases of a sane mechanical design. Therefore, it is more oriented on fundamental concepts than on the computation of particular elements. |
| Prerequisites : | Rational mechanics
Strength of materials |
| Workshops : | Exercises (2 hours a week) |
| Organization : | 2 hours (course) plus 2 hours (exercises) for each week, during the first semester. |
| Written notes : | The whole text of the course is edited by the AEES (three books : text, figures and complementary documents) |
| Assessment : | Oral examination. The student may consult any book. |
